How It HappenedÂ
The Franciscan Barons lost to the Oberlin College Yeowomen 15-8 on a frigid Wednesday night in Oberlin.
In the first five minutes of the match the Yeowoman didn't allow a single score by the Barons, let alone any shots. The Barons first score would not come until Joanna Hilkert connected with the back of the net with 9 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter. This score injected some life into the slow-starting Barons. When points in this match they came in bunches, halfway through the first quarter veteran Ashley Morisey snuck one past the goalie to make it a one score game for the Barons. Then 3 minutes later Grace Deegan scored her first of 3 goals for the Barons. Although the Barons were able to get points on the board late, they still trailed the Yeowoman by two at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was much like the first, points came late. The Barons defense took a stand against the Yeowoman, no one was letting the other one up. The Barons had a couple shots in the earlier parts of the 2nd quarter, but neither team could quite get the job done. Things looked like a standstill until a good run by Carolyn Cooke and communication by the offense set up a score by Theresa Lyle with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. However, points came in bunches and a minute later Katheryn Brehm flung the ball into the back of the net to make it a one score game. However, while Barons made solid efforts to keep it close the Yeowoman scored in the last minute of the quarter and the Barons trailed entering the half.
Coming out of the half, the 3rd quarter was a tough battle for the Barons. Turnovers hurt the team early on and this allowed the Yeowoman to score and build themselves a sizable lead. Although the Barons had some shots later on, they couldn't finish offensive runs and the Yeowoman were up 12-5 at the conclusion of the 3rd quarter.
Entering the 4th quarter, the last 15 minutes of play, the Barons knew that they had to stall the Yeowoman one final time for them to climb out of their deficit. While they didn't allow a score in the first 5 minutes, turnovers kept the Barons shooting themselves in the foot and would be a big factor in the outcome of this game. However, this didn't stop Grace Deegan from connecting with the goal twice in the last 10 minutes of the game. The Barons managed to score one final time off the stick of Theresa Lyle to make it an 8-15.
