How It Happened
The Barons come home after clinching their fourth straight trip to the PAC tournament. A win against the Yellow Jackets would bring the Barons to 5-1 in the conference and inn position to possibly move into second place by the end of the year. A loss would make it extremely difficult to finish any better than 3rd. With so much at stake the Barons cam eout of the gates swinging. Theresa Lyle wheeled around a screen and was fouled near the goalie crease to earn a free position. Lyle put the ball to the back of the net to score the lead off goal just a minute and a half into the game. A couple of minutes later Carolyn Cooke was fouled and scored the second Baron goal off a free position. Grace Deegan won the draw control then found Katheryn Brehm streaking up field. Brehm found Cooke again for a one-two bang bang goal. Just four minutes into the game and the Barons were leading 3-0. The Yellow Jackets answered, but that wouldn't stop the Baron momentum. The freshmen Kiera Wilson, found a crease in the defense and capitalized the opportunity to score her 9th goal of the year. At the end of the 1st the Barons were leading 6-1.
Kiera Wilson continued to wheel and deal and tabbed another assist finding Katheryn Brehm cutting across the crease. Late in the second quarter Riley O'Brien found herself in the penalty box after a dangerous propulsion penalty for hitting a player on her shot. That didn't slow the Barons down. Theresa Lyle intercepted a pass at midfield and took it all the way to the net to score putting the Barons up 10 and doing so a man down. Going into halftime the Barons were leading 13-1.
In the second half the Barons extended their lead protecting the running clock ten goal differential. With all the goal scoring going on Bronwyn McGovern decided to get into the mix. Lyle picked up a ground ball from O'Brien hitting the pipe on her shot. She found McGovern across the formation and she buried it to score the first goal of her career.
With a hefty lead in the 4th quarter, the Barons moved Margaret McKee up from the defensive end allowing her to get on the attack. McKee took advantage of the opportunity and scored the Barons 21st goal of the game, her first this season, and the 4th of her career.
