Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Aaron Spoelman

Baron Forwards are Locked Out in Tough Loss

Franciscan 0, Waynesburg 1

Starting XI
Elise Winogradoff, Teaghan Elmore, Gabriela De La Torre, Isabella Corley, Maria De La Torre, Tania Davidson, Angela Postage, Bella Rubino, Lillian Torbeck, Juliana Rubino, & Goalkeeper - Natalia Capaccio

How It Happened
The Yellow Jackets game plan was to play man plus one on both Juliana Rubino and Tania Davidson. The Barons tried to create a numbers advantage on one side of the field by putting Davidson and Rubino on the same side. However, the defenders were able to handle the younger Baron forwards opposite the two veteran stars, and with the 4th goalie in net on her first start, it was risky to push midfielders too far up and leave the defense on an island.
The result of two teams well prepared for each other's game plans was a low number of high quality opportunities and a back and forth battle in the midfield. The lone Yellow Jackets' goal was a bit of a misfortune for the Barons' Capaccio. The Jackets had a corner kick and put the ball on the ground right in front of the net 10 yds out. The Barons had a defender placed on the far side post, but as the ball bounced in play she crept forward and toward the middle. The Jackets' Hill ricocheted the ball around the outside of the Baron defender coming up from the goal post. The ball then rolled on the ground toward the right corner of the net. Since, the Baron defender was in front of the shot, Capaccio couldn't have vision of the ball until it was too late and already rolling in. With the 1-0 lead mid-second half, the Jackets sank in and protected the lead.

Inside the Numbers
-Franciscan had 20 shots with 8 on goal
-Tania Davidson took the bulk of those shots with 10 and 4 on net
-Gabriella De La Torre had a season high 4 shots and 2 on goal
-Capaccio recorded 7 saves in her first start

Who's Next?
Franciscan will continue PAC play on the road this weekend at Grove City. The Barons are 2-5 all-time against the Wolverines with both wins coming last season. Franciscan won the regular season matchup by a score of 6-1, and then won a PAC semifinal matchup by a score of 4-1. Both of those game were in Steubenville, as Franciscan is in search of their first win at Grove City. The Wolverines were picked ahead of the Barons in the #2 spot in the PAC Coaches' Preseason poll. So far they have held a .500 record in non-conference play.
