How It HappenedÂ
After last night's win, the Barons are sitting at 7 PAC points which is good enough for 1st place. Waynesburg plays Westminster tonight and a win from them pushes Franciscan down a spot. Geneva and Grove City also play tonight, and a win from Grove City pushes Franciscan down a spot as well.Â
In the last four years Franciscan not much has stood in the way from the Barons rolling through the Presidents. They have won three of the four contests only allowing a single goal from W&J in those three games, and the fourth game was a tie. Nerves got a little strained in the first half for Franciscan. It was a slow start and the Barons were not looking very aggressive. They possessed and controlled the ball well, in fact absolutely dominated time of possession, but yet only garnered two more scoring opportunities than the Presidents. On one occasion late in the first half, forward
Lucas Cross let out his frustration on his teams slow start. Imploring them to play harder. He made a special play near the end of the half to put the Barons on the board and wake them up.Â
After what I can assume was a rousing halftime talk, the Barons re-calibrated and looked like their regular-selves. They maintained good possessions while getting aggressive and attacking forward. Aidan Mahoney continues to be a boost each time he comes in the game. He combines the speed of Cross and Schriner, the dribbling skills of St. George, with the leg power of Muldoon and Freeman. He scored the third Baron goal and his third of the season. With a 4-0 win and the sixth shutout of the season, the Barons felt much better of their performance after the second half concluded.
Inside the Numbers Â
-Cross' two goals puts him at 12 on the year possibly moving him into the top 5 in the nation in goals scored
-Miller recorded 4 saves
-six of the seven Baron wins this year have been in shutouts
Who's Next?
Franciscan will continue PAC play on the road Friday, as they make the trip to Westminster. The Barons are 6-5-1 all-time against the Titans with wins in their last four meetings. Last season, the Barons won 4-3 in a thrilling game in Stuebenville.
Lucas Cross scored twice in the first eight minutes, but the Titans would respond.
Augustine Rubino and
Joseph St. George would score in the second half, as the Barons would need all of them to win by one. The Titans are off to a slow start, but will be well rested, as they will have six days off from competition when they take the field on Friday.
