How It Happened
Coming into the game the Barons were on the outside looking in at the PAC playoff standings. A win over the Yellow Jackets could have vaulted them into fourth place and a loss would have all but sealed their fate of making the postseason. The Yellow Jackets found themselves in a similar dire situation of needing to avoid a loss for risk of missing playoffs. This led to a tightly played first half. The Barons are at their best when they sink in on defense and limit opportunities then play the long ball up to their talented forwards. The first half went exactly as you would have expected. The Yellow Jackets threw out a plethora of shots that Dill easily scooped up. She had eight first half saves compared to the opposing keep's two. The game went into the half tied nill-nill.
The second half is when the action started to heat up. Dexter scored her 13th goal of the season to put the Barons up 1-0. The Yellow Jackets continued to press and as the clock wound down emotions flared up. Waynesburg's Ngugi was given a yellow card after fighting a little too aggressively for the ball in midfield. E. Winogradoff used the restart opportunity to put one of the Barons three second half shots on net, but the winning line was to continue to sink in and hold out for the shutout win. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets found a crack in the Baron line and capitalized to tie the game in the 81'. Dexter managed to break loose and get a shot off before the end, but that was the only shot recorded from either side before time expired.
The PAC point for the tie keeps Franciscan in the playoff hunt. They are tied with Bethany in points but don't hold the tiebreaker. The path to the playoffs is not blocked, but there's a considerable amount in the way. It starts with the Barons needing to defeat their remaining two opponents, one of which is above them in the standings. The biggest thing working against them is they have played one game more than the three teams directly ahead of them in the standings, so those teams will have one additional opportunity to earn points and stay ahead of the Barons on the standings.
Inside the Numbers
-Dexter's goal is her 13th of the year and she sits 3rd in the PAC in goals scored
-Dill recorded 12 saves
Who's Next?
Franciscan will continue PAC Play on Wednesday at Allegheny. The Barons are 2-0 all-time against the Gators, including a 3-0 win last season in Steubenville. All three goals came in the second half, as
Juliana Rubino,
Tania Davidson, and
Elise Winogradoff found the back of the net in the victory. This will be another pivotal matchup in terms of conference standings with both teams in the hunt for playoff spots.
