How It HappenedÂ
The Baron attack was deliberate and consistent. They recorded almost identical offensive halves with eight shots and six shots on goal in each. In the opening minutes, Cross quickly put the Barons up one scoring the first goal of the game. After the quick goal the Gators settled in and the game was a much closer back and forth. After that point each team registered three more shots on goal, but it was the Barons that turned one of those into another score. Just before half, Cross found St. George who put in his second goal of the season and, what would be, the night's game winning goal.Â
In the second half, the 6 Baron shots on goal were harder for the Gators to stop. The Barons tallied three more goals for a total of five on the game extending their dominant lead in offensive production in the PAC. The Gators mustered a few more opportunities than they did in the first half in an attempt to comeback. Their efforts garnered one goal, but not near enough to keep pace with the Barons. Although, one goal is a lot to be proud of against the Baron defense. In nine PAC games, the Barons have only allowed a grand total of 5 goals. Last night's goal puts Allegheny's Weaver in small company as only four other PAC players have managed to accomplish what he did.
If you read last games article you should be familiar with the Barons playoff position. For the newer readers, the Barons currently sit in first place with only Geneva left on the schedule. Both Grove City and Geneva are biting at their heels behind them in the standings. The Barons two ties and having played 9 games vs Grove City's 8 and Geneva's 7 puts them in a precarious spot. In my previous article I stated, "all roads lead to Geneva". A win against the Tornadoes guarantees first place seed and all that comes with it. A loss in Beaver may, and likely will, result in a third place finish. Thankfully, the Barons get a nice cushion of rest and time of preparation for the regular season finale against Geneva. That game doesn't take place for seven more days. While, the Golden Tornadoes have two games wedged in between now and then.Â
Inside the Numbers Â
-Cross's two goals brings him to 17 on the season
-A. Miller recorded 8 saves
-the Barons had 4 assists on their 5 goals
Who's Next?
Franciscan will have the weekend off from competition, as this is their bye for PAC play. They will conclude the regular season at Geneva on Wednesday, October 30th at 7:00 p.m. The Barons are 3-12-3 all-time against the Golden Tornadoes with a pair of ties in their last two meetings. Their last win against them came in 2021. The Golden Tornadoes are the reigning PAC Champions, and they are off to another strong start in 2024. They are Regionally Ranked and unbeaten in PAC play, like the Barons. The winner of this game will earn the #1 seed in the conference heading into the PAC Championship Tournament.Â
