How It Happened
The Barons, sitting at 18 points, had the opportunity to clinch a playoff berth with a win Saturday night. However, the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets who are fighting to stay in the playoff picture were close to a win or be done scenario. The opening goal was a lucky one for the Yellow Jackets. They played a long ball crossing to the left side of the box. The goalkeeper slipping as he changed directions created an open net for the Waynesburg striker. That goal gave the Yellow Jackets life and they used that momentum to grab a second goal before entering the half break. Coach was happy with the execution of his players, but felt that there were just some unlucky moments that Waynesburg did a great job of capitalizing on. The second half, opened with yet another goal to put the Barons down three. Young teams usually do not come back from those kinds of deficits. Thankfully, they have been battle tested all season, and the experience they earned playing from behind against tough non-conference opponents prepared them for this moment.
The Barons first goal came in the 52'. Rubino found Phillips from the top of the box on the left side of the goalie box. Phillips hit a cross that rolled perfectly across the entire formation to find Goduti. Goduti punched it in to a wide open right side net. That goal ignited the Barons. After that goal, the Barons came after the Yellow Jackets with an intensity they were not ready for. Two more goals were netted in just over 10 minutes.
Forcing the tie puts the Barons at 19 PAC points holding a four point margin between them and 3rd place Saint Vincent.
By the Numbers
- Miller made 4 saves
- Venditti's 2 assists is his second multi-assist game
Who's Next?
Franciscan remains at home to take on Allegheny on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The Barons are 3-0-1 all-time against the Gators, as they have won the last three matchups. Last season, the Barons beat them twice by a combined score of 9-3. In the PAC Semifinal match, Franciscan won 4-2.
Lucas Cross went off in the first half with three goals to accumulate 20 goals and break All-American, Leo Herrmann's program record for most in a season. Allegheny is in playoff position once again this season, as this will be a pivotal match for both teams as the 2025 regular season is nearing the end.
