Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Aaron Spoelman

Women's Defense Sends Them to the Playoffs

Franciscan 0, Geneva 0

Starting XI
Catherine DeWolf, Elise Doyle, Teaghan Elmore, Bella Urso, Isabella Corley, Felicity Igot, Abigail Parker, Kierra Wilson, Brenna Pereira, Abby Measor, & Goalkeeper - Callie Giguere

How It Happened
The Barons put themselves in a position where they controlled their own destiny for playoff hopes. Their opponents, Geneva Golden Tornadoes, were in a must win situation or their season would be over. The Geneva play style was very defensive keeping four players back, while the Barons played more forward and pressured the defense. This clash of styles led to a perfect situation for the Barons. All they needed was a tie and controlling possession for a significant portion of the game was a safe way to reach that goal. However, the Golden Tornadoes prowess on the defense end was a tough line to crack. The Barons had a handful of high quality opportunities, but each time the defenders quickly recovered or the keeper made a fantastic save.
Late in the second half the Golden Tornadoes switched their strategy. With the game stuck and 0-0, a tie was as good as a loss so they pushed their formation forward to try and pressure the Barons more. At this point the possession control became an even split. The Barons defense punched out every Geneva run to hold on to the tie and advance to the PAC Playoffs.

Inside the Numbers
- Giguere made three saves in her 4th shutout of the year
- Teaghan Elmore had a game-high 3 SOG
