Fusco Walk-Off Homer Gives the Barons their First PAC Win

Franciscan Lineup

How It Happened
It took some heroics but the Barons took care of business to pick up their first conference win of the season in game one.

The Barons struck first in the second when Nemmers drove in Fusco, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. The Yellow Jackets then scored five runs over the next three innings to take a 5-1 lead. Waynesburg was in total control and had all the momentum until the home half of the eighth inning.

Stoehr led off the inning with a double, and then with one out, Ashcraft knocked him to close the gap. Nemmers then drove in Ashcraft after he stole second. Then with two outs, a wild pitch scored Nemmers to pull the Barons within one. Falconite then delivered the equalizer with an RBI single to knot it up at 5-5. The Barons' two-out magic was not complete until the lead was theirs on a Bodie RBI single.

Wade Stoehr came in to close it down in the ninth, but back-to-back errors to start the inning put Waynesburg in a threatening position. They were able to plate one as Stoehr pitched tremendously to minimize the damage as we were off to extra innings.

Each team had a runner in scoring position in the 10th inning, but no runs came across. Stoehr still was on the mound, as he shut down the Yellow Jackets in the 11th once again. In the bottom of the 11th, John Fusco hit his first collegiate homer on a high drive to right field that cleared the 20-foot fence and sent the bench to home plate to celebrate the walk-off win with the reigning PAC Hitter of the Week.

At the Plate
- Peffer led the Barons with four hits.
- Fusco had three hits, including the walk-off home run and a pair of walks.

How It Happened
Coach Rick Carver marched the same batting lineup out in Game #2 after the victory. Both offenses were held off the board for the first three innings, as both starters were on a roll. That changed in the third, as the Yellow Jackets struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth. John Nemmers answered in the home half of the inning with his second home run of the season. Unfortunaetely, the Barons were not able to to overcome the deficit, as the Yellow Jackets added insurance in the fifth and then six runs in the sixth.

The Barons scored three runs in the sixth to set the score at 9-5. They added one run in the eighth, but the Waynesburg bullpen stood strong to shut it down the rest of the way.

At the Plate
- Peffer added four more hits to have eight on the day.
- Nemmers had three hits, including his team-high second home run.
- Bodie and Peffer each hit triples.
- Franzonello hit a pair of doubles

On the Mound
- Heideman was dominant early on but then was on the hook for the loss.
- Gildehaus had two earned runs in the sixth after coming in relief.
- Dax Clifton pitched another clean inning, as he continued to show his promise.
- Gavyn Romanyak pitched his first multi-inning outing with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Up Next
The Barons will play a couple of non-conference foes to finish out the week. They return to action on Thursday at Mount Aloysius. The Barons are in search of their first win all-time against the Mounties, but they have not played them since 2011. They won 21 games last season and have already won 11 through a tough, non-conference slate this season.
