How It Happened
Franciscan made the trip up to Sandusky, Ohio on Friday morning to take part in the Great Lakes Crossover hosted by Heidelberg University. 21 teams made the trip, and the Barons got to play in one of the first games on Friday against Baldwin Wallace. Behind 26 kills by Logan Hickey, the Barons beat the Yellow Jackets for the first time in program history.

The story of set one was the debut of Logan Hickey, who earned the start as a true freshman at outside hitter. Her presence was felt early and often, as she had three kills in Franciscan's first five points. She accumulated 10 kills in the opening set, including the final point to secure a 25-22 win in set one.

In the second set, the Barons were the first to 15 points at 15-14, but then the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run. That was a lead that they did not relinquish, as they won the second set 25-20 to tie it up at one set apiece.

In the third, Mary Jean Cadman and Tessa Miller got the offense going early to help the Barons take an early lead. Franciscan held a 15-13 but then Baldwin Wallace made a run. The Yellow Jackets took an 18-17 lead, but the Barons answered with a 3-0 run. Logan Hickey added a pair of late kills to secure the third set and take a 2-1 edge in the match.

Baldwin Wallace came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead. A Franciscan 5-0 run, including a pair of kills by Cadman knotted the score up at nine all. The Barons kept up that momentum, as they were the first to fifteen at 15-12. The Yellow Jackets were not discouraged, as they went on a 5-0 run of their own later in this set to regain the lead and hold on to win the fourth set.

The Yellow Jackets appeared to have all the momentum, as they built a 4-1 lead in the fifth set. Franciscan was not fazed, as they answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Tessa Miller had a kill, and Mary Updike recorded an ace in that run. Baldwin Wallace answered once more with a 4-0 run to tie it up at 8-8 and make it anyone's game in the race to 15. Miller regained the momentum with a big kill, and then Kaitlan Hickey had back-to-back aces to give Franciscan a three-point lead at 11-8. The Barons ended this roller coaster ride of a season-opening game by securing victory with a kill by Cadman. Barons won the fifth 15-12.

How It Happened
Franciscan squared off with another tough non-conference foe out of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in game two. Muskingum was able to come out on top in this one.

Set one belonged to the Fighting Muskies, as they jumped out to a commanding 15-7 edge. Logan Hickey added multiple kills down the stretch, and Caroline Linklater added one, but the opposition took the first set 25-13. Set two was a similar result, as the Fighting Muskies went on a couple of runs to control the set. They took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-12 set score.

In set three, the Barons took an early 7-5 edge. A couple of aces by Mary Smart and some strong offensive attacks allowed the Barons to be the first to fifteen at 15-12. The Fighting Muskies flipped the script and took the advantage up to a three-point lead of their own at 19-16. Cadman and Hickey provided several big kills to fight back into this game.
