How It HappenedÂ
The Barons traveled to Chatham on Tuesday evening to play the Cougars. Chatham entered this contest with a 2-0 mark in PAC play to sit atop the conference's South Division. The Barons won the opening set, but the Cougars won the next three, which were each tightly contested.Â
The first set was a nail-biter, as the Barons opened up with a 2-0 lead, and neither team held a three-point lead until Chatham led 21-18. Coach
Jen Hickey called a timeout to rally the Barons. The Barons tied the match, which forced a Chatham timeout before they added three more points to give them a 6-0 run to win the first set.
The Barons' backers were in for another close one, as a balanced offensive attack led to a close one again. Franciscan had 13 kills in the second set, but a couple too many service errors prohibited the Barons from building momentum. At 22-21, the Cougars rattled off three consecutive points to take the set.
Chatham came out strong in the third, as they were the first to fifteen at 15-11, but this set ended up as the closest of the night. The score was tied eight different times, as the Barons battled back to tie it up at 15-15. It ended up as an 8-0 run, and Franciscan held a 19-15 advantage. The Barons were able to serve for set-point a couple of times, but the Cougars rallied back and eventually won the set 28-26.
The fourth was not the Barons' best offensive set, but the Cougars helped them out with eight attacking errors and five service errors. That provided us another very close set, as this match could have gone either way tonight. Chatham led for the majority of this set, but the Barons battled back late, and after kills from Cadman and Hickey we were tied at 23-23. The Cougars answered with two consecutive points to take the match and remain unbeaten in PAC play.

Up Next
Franciscan returns home to take on Pitt.-Greensburg on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The Barons are 13-3 all-time against the Bobcats, including wins in their last six meetings. This will be the first time the Bobcats come to Steubenville since the 2018 season. Last season, they played each other twice, as the Barons swept them at Kenyon, and then won in four sets in Greensburg. Pitt.-Greensburg is off to a slow start in non-conference play. They have been swept by five PACÂ schools, Washington & Jefferson, Chatham, Waynesburg, Westminster, and Bethany, in part of their 1-12 record so far.Â
