Box Score CINCINNATI – The Franciscan men's soccer team got back in the win column on Sunday as the Barons used three first-half goals to fuel a 5-1 win over Mt. St. Joseph on the road.
The scoring came quick and often in the Barons' non-conference tilt with the Lions as junior Kevin Herrmann (Steubenville, OH/Catholic Central) opened the scoring with his second goal of the season just 7:46 into the game. Seven minutes later, sophomore Sebastian Koehler (Ashburn, VA/Seton Home Study) got on the board with his second of the season as he took a pass from freshman Nick Miller (Galena, OH/Olentangy) and went top shelf to give FUS a 2-0 lead.
With just 10 minutes to play in the first, freshman Joseph Fioramonti (Manassas, VA/Seton) scored his first collegiate goal as he gave the Barons a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Lions got one back in the 51st minute to cut the lead to 3-1 early in the second half, but the Franciscan defense was able to keep Mt. St. Joseph off balance for the rest of the game.
The two-goal difference didn't last long, however, as Herrmann netted his third of the season eight minutes later to give Franciscan a 4-1 lead. Junior Ian Baldau (Las Vegas, NV/St. Michael's) put the finishing touches on the scoring for Franciscan as he buried his second goal of the season just four minutes later to give FUS a 5-1 lead.
Miller narrowly missed a goal to give Franciscan a 6-1 lead as his last shot of the game ricocheted off of the post with 1:31 to play. David Ventura-Diaz got the final shot of the game off with 19 seconds left but it went wide and the score stood 5-1 in favor of Franciscan.
The Barons out-shot the Lions 20-12 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"Overall I am just really happy with this win today," remarked head coach Christian Bobak. "We had a lot of guys get playing time which was great to see and I am glad we could put some goals on the board. Kevin played great for us up front again and it was good to get Joe (Fioramonti) his first collegiate goal."
Sophomore keeper Brian Gaughan (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) made six saves in his fourth win of the season after playing the first 74:34 in the net before classmate Claudio Ferrari (Worcester, MA/Bancroft School) finished out the final 15:26 and did not face a shot on goal.
The Barons continue their brief road trip as they travel to Washington, PA to take on Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
"We're looking forward to two tough matches coming up," remarked Coach Bobak. "We're going to get some rest and get ready for the next two games."
