GREENVILLE, Pa. – After 110 minutes of action in the season opener for both teams, both the Franciscan men's soccer team and Thiel had to settle for a 0-0 tie, Friday evening.
Franciscan out-shot the Tomcats 27-8, putting 12 shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. With less than seven minutes to play in regulation, the Barons appeared to have broken the tie but the goal was waived off due to Franciscan being called for being offside. Senior
Ian Baldau put two more shots on net but both were turned away by Thiel goalie, Devin Weisbarth, and the game headed into overtime.
Senior
Mark Fioramonti's shot in the first 15 seconds was blocked and Thiel got the next two shots off, but like Franciscan, couldn't get the first goal of the season. The Barons had a free kick with less than two minutes to play in the first overtime period, but sophomore
Matt Kuefler's shot went high just high and the score held, 0-0.
Evan Young got the only shot of the second overtime off for Thiel with 3:44 to play in the game but his shot went wide and the game eventually ended 0-0.
Junior keeper
Brian Gaughan needed just four saves for his first shutout of the season. Baldau led the team with eight shots.
Franciscan will return to action on Wednesday as the Barons travel to Geneva for a 7pm non-conference contest.
