How It HappenedÂ
The Barons hopes of another quick start were shattered by blown layups and miscues in defensive transition. The half-court defense anchored the first few minutes, holding the Cougars. Unfortunately, missed easy opportunities on the offensive end prevented the Barons from capitalizing on their staunch defense. After three minutes of play the score was only 2-2. Shooters from both teams started finding their spots, and after ten minutes of play the score was 17-14 Cougars. The 3pt shot from Sean Hickey is what brought the Barons to within three. This forced a timeout from the Cougars. The ensuing possessions seemed like deja vu, the Barons would miss a shot, Cougars would corral the long rebound then transition down the floor for an easy 2pts. This stretch quickly built a 17 point lead. The starting 5 found a little fire and clawed back to within 9, but the Cougars hit multiple three's in a row, and their lead quickly jumped back out to 20.
The second half quickly became a continuation of the first half. Within minutes the Cougars had a 30 point lead. The starters were called to the bench, and the Barons relied on their bench to close out the rest of the game. The remainder of play was evenly matched.Â
