How It Happened
Franciscan baseball opened up PAC play at Waynesburg on Friday afternoon with a nine inning win. The Barons tallied up 17 hits and 12 runs while
Jacob Watson pitched a complete game win to start 1-0 in conference play.Â
The visiting Barons did not waste time to get the bats going, as they put up a crooked number in the top of the first inning. Three batters in the bases would be loaded, as
Patrick Wallace hit a single with
Ryan Scavnicky and
Michael Maynard drawing walks.
Brendan Burke would drive in the first run on a fielder's choice up the middle, then
Andrew Normandin would drive in another run on an infield single.
Daniel Halsey kept it up, as he reach on a fielder's choice that scored Maynard. Just like that Franciscan gave starter
Jacob Watson a 3-0 lead to work with in this nine inning affair.Â
Maynard would get another big inning going in the top of the third, as he led off with a single. He would make it over to third on a stolen base and an error before
Andrew Normandin would drive him in on a single. Halsey would keep the rally going with a single to give
Aidan Hickey an opportunity with a pair of runners aboard. He delivered an RBI double to the opposite field that scored Normandin. That would chase the starter Clevinger out of the game, as Waynesburg would go to Sabolek.
Ryan Anselmino would be his first batter, and he would drive in Halsey on a groundout to the second baseman. That would set the score at 6-0 Franciscan leading.Â
Franciscan would keep the foot on the gas, as
Patrick Wallace got his third hit of the day to lead off the fourth with a double down the right field line. With one out Brendan Buke would deliver again, as a groundout to the shortstop scored Wallace from third. Watson would keep putting zeros up for Franciscan, as he continues to have a strong start to the season on the mound. The Barons added one more run in the top of the seventh.
Brendan Burke led off the inning with a double to left center field. He would move over to third on a groundout, and then Halsey would score him on a single to the opposite field. That set the score at 8-0.Â
The Baron bats were not done yet, as they added four runs all with two-out runs in the eighth.
Ryan Scavnicky would gather a one-out single hit to his counterpart at shortstop.
Brendan Burke would then come to the dish with two outs and deliver a double to right center to score Scavnicky. Normandin then drove in Burke on a single, and Halsey would get hit by pitch to have two runners on base for Hickey. He delivered a double that scored two runs before he was thrown out at third when trying to stretch it into a triple. The Barons would take a 12-0 lead.
Jacob Watson would take the ball into the ninth, as he attempted the nine-inning complete game. He would allow three hits and two runs in the ninth, but get the 27th out to register the complete game win.Â
