Franciscan baseball hosted Geneva at Vaccaro Field for their first matchup of the 2022 season on beautiful Friday afternoon in Steubenville.Â
The Golden Tornadoes would get on the board first, in the first, as a three run home run would set the score at 3-0. In the third inning, Franciscan would score a pair in the third, as
Patrick Wallace and
Ryan Scavnicky would single to get on base. With two outs,
Brendan Burke would deliver a double that score a pair to tighten the game to a score of 3-2. The Golden Tornadoes responded quickly with a solo home run in the fourth, just there fifth home run as a team thus far this season.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth,
Brendan Burke would get a rally going with a single to center.
Andrew Normandin did the same thing to put runners on first and second with one out.
Wade Stoehr would come in to pinch hit and pop out. That would put the pressure on
Aidan Hickey, who delivered with a single that scored Burke.
Daniel Halsey would then hit a chopper between the third baseman and shortstop that got into the outfield to score two more Barons. Franciscan would take a 5-4 lead into the seventh. The Golden Tornadoes would be threatening, so Coach Rick Carveer would go to the bullpen in after one out, as
Ryan Neely came in to pitch. In just two pitches he would get a ground ball double play to get out of the jam.Â
In the seventh inning,
Patrick Wallace would lead off with a double, and then
Ryan Scavnicky would knock a single.
Michael Maynard helped add a big insurance run, as he deliverd a sacrifice fly to center field that score Wallace. Neely would remain in toshutdown the Golden Tornadoes to record his second save of the year and secure the Barons second win in a row this week.
