How It HappenedÂ
After winning the HLM tournament in Erie, Penn. then traveling to New Concord, Ohio to beat Muskingum University, the Barons finally came home to beat another AMCC school in the team's home opener. Going into last night's game the Barons were on a 4-game win streak against the Bobcats. Last night's 2-0 victory brought that to a 5 game streak, and the Barons 3-0-1 start is the best start in program history. The shutout brings goalkeeper Jax Mautone's total to 3 shutouts in 4 games. Nick Cross had quite a night scoring. He led off the scoring in the 14th minute off a Mikey Irvin cross to Jonathan Schriner who gave it a quick touch to Cross. The Barons spent the majority of the first half on the attack end. Nick Miller had 6 corner kicks in the first half. All but one of the corner kicks produced quality high percentage scoring opportunities. The Greensburg goalkeeper had a busy night keeping his team in the game. In the second half during the 50th minute Nick Cross returned the favor to teammate Jonathan Schriner giving him a quick touch near the goal to score his first goal of the season.
The Barons have four more non-conference games to play before entering PAC conference play. As coach Ridenour solves the problem of how to give minutes to so many quality soccer players, we'll continue to build excitement for the record start the team is having.
Inside the Numbers Â
-Jax Mautone is now 2nd in the PAC in GA and SavePct
-Nick Cross' 3 point performance is his career best
-Jax Mautone now has 8 career shutouts
Who's Next?Â
Franciscan will conclude their busy week of three games on Saturday at home against Pitt.-Bradford. The Barons are 8-4 all-time against the Panthers, including wins in their last five matchups with them. This will be the first time these two teams play each other in a non-conference setting, as Franciscan left the AMCC in 2020 for the PAC. In their last meeting in 2019, the Barons netted three goals in the second half, including one from Nick Miller to win by a score of 3-1.
