How It HappenedÂ
The Barons went on the road for the first time this year to face the Capital Comets in Colubus, Ohio. The Comets had an immediate restart opportunity with a corner kick just one minute into the contest. They turned that opportunity into an early 1-0 lead. The defensive-minded Barons sunk in and held the Comets to only one more shot for the remainder of the first half.Â
The Comets became frustrated with the significant advantage the Barons had in ball possession and the constant pressure they put on their defense. This led to a comet red card in their box, so Ryan Miller stepped up to do what he does best and bury a PK. Ryan is 7-8 in his career for PK's after taking over that responsibility from his brother Nick. Nick is the all-time leader for the Barons in made PK's with 14. Ryan is currently sitting at 7. He made 6 PK's last season, so that pace puts him close to challenging his brother for the all-time lead.Â
The Comets found a way to break the Baron defense and break the tie down a man shortly after the Barons tied the game. After over 60 minutes of no goal scoring from either side, we got a flurry of scoring in just two minutes. After going back down 2-1, Muldoon used his howitzer of a right leg to beat the goalkeeper and tie the game. Neither side was willing to concede any more scoring and after the 90' the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Inside the Numbers Â
-Freeman had a game-high 5 shots
-Venditti recorded the only assist for the Barons
-Miller's Yellow card is his first of the season
Who's Next?
Franciscan will have the weekend off from competition, as they return home to take on Marietta on Wednesday, September 11th. Franciscan is looking to knot up their all-time series record, as they hold a 2-3 record against the Pioneers. The Barons have got the better of them in recent years, by beating them in each of the previous two seasons. Last season, Aidan Mahony and Augustine Rubino scored within seconds of each other to take a 2-1 lead at the half. Kolbe Rice added a second half goal to give the Barons needed insurance, as they would go on to win 3-2. So far this season, the Pioneers have split against a pair of PAC schools. They lost to Chatham 1-0, and they beat Washington & Jefferson 1-0. The matchup against Franciscan will be the third of a five consecutive road games for the Pioneers.Â
