How It Happened
Franciscan Women's Swimming & Diving resumed the 2024-25 season with their first meet of the semester at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. The Barons won several events in a closely, contested battle against the Presidents that resulted in the hosts winning by a narrow margin.
Kate Kinst secured the first win of the day for Franciscan in the second event, 1000 yard freestyle. Her time of 11:59.66 beat the field by 15 seconds. Sydney McGee placed 4th, and Ramona DiNardo took fifth in this event as well. The wins continued in the next event. Bridget Bartosik won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:11.57 to earn nine points. Avery Schmitz was right behind her in second, and Rachel Comstock placed fifth.
Katarina Antonov secured her first win of the day in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.78. She edged out a Presidents' swimmer by less than two seconds while Emma Grojean was in third and Magdalena Kleb placed fifth.
The Presidents then won the next handful of events, including one meter diving, as Franciscan does not have a diver this season. Antonov broke the drought with a win in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:46.80. Sophia Gellner was a little more than thirty seconds behind her teammate in third place.
Kinst took home the final Franciscan win of the day to give her a pair of top finishes. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.10. Grojean placed third, and Kleb placed fourth. The Presidents won both relays narrowly over the Barons today, but all in all a strong performance by the Barons to start the 2025 calendar year.
