How It Happened
For what feels like the millionth year, the Barons finish their regular season playing the Geneva Golden Tornadoes, and as always it's an important game for playoff position. The difference this year, is instead of competing for the #1 and #2 seeds, the Goldent Tornadoes were down in the #5 spot hoping to move into #4 and be home for the quarterfinals. The Barons could clinch #2 with a win, a tie, or an Allegheny loss/tie. The nightmare scenario would be falling to Geneva and Allegheny winning, in which the Barons would fall to #3 and lose their bye round.
Not taking any chance, the Barons came out of the gates on the attack and were in firm control of the game. Before the halfway mark, they had built up a two goal lead. The Geneva coach was significantly disappointed in his teams efforts and gave a world class motivational speech at halftime. As a result, the Geneva men were a proverbial storm to start the second half. They went on the attack and had found a level of urgency that was shocked the Barons. The two goal lead that the Barons spent 45 minutes building disappeared in flash. The Tornadoes scored two goals in the 49' and 57'. The Barons did a great job of weathering that attack and picking up their intensity to match what the Tornadoes were bringing. As the half drew on the game became more even in terms of possession and attacking opportunities. Slowly, the Barons regained control of the game and by the end of the match, the Tornadoes "storm" had been quelled. The Barons were back in the driver's seat and knocking on the door for a game-winner. Lucky for the visitors, they hung on and held the 2-2 tie.
By the Numbers
- Miller made two saves
- Cross had a game-high 5 shots and 3 SOG
