How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan men's soccer completed the doubleheader shutout of the Westminster Titans last night. The women started the evening with a 1-0 shutout and the men followed suit with a 2-0 shutout of their own.Â
The Titans came to Trinity Health System field searching for their first win of the season. They had a noticeable speed advantage early. However, the Barons disciplined team play and ball control stifled the electrifying Titan forwards. The quick counterstrike approach the Titans took were quickly muffled by the Baron defensive line and the ball was quickly back into the Titans end of the field with the Barons on the attack.Â
The men went into half with the 2-0 lead. Coach identified that the Titans were talented and fighting extremely hard to get on the board and work towards their first win. He predicted that if the Titans scored the first goal out of the half break it would be an all out battle for the rest of regulation, and if the Barons scored first the offense would open up and you may see a run of goals. The opponents held on and prevented the offensive floodgates from opening, but the strong defensive minded team didn't allow any high-quality opportunities and provided a smooth path for another Miller shutout.
By the Numbers
- Titans had three cautionsÂ
- Franciscan had 8 corners to the Titans 1
- Miller only had to make one save
Who's Next?
Franciscan remains at home to take on Bethany at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Barons are 9-6-4 all-time against the Bison, including a win against them last season. In that 2-0 victory,
Joseph St. George scored in the first half, and
Julien Freeman scored in the second half while
Aiden Miller recorded a six save shutout. The Bison have had a slow start to the season but have shown improvement under second-year Head Coach Matthew Wolf.
