On Tuesday night at The Fez Banquet Center in Aliquippa, the President's Athletic Conference (PAC) announced the PAC Scholar Athletes of the Year. Two athletes from each member institution earned this distinguished honor. From Franciscan, Nathaniel Carter of men's lacrosse and Jazzlyn Melnyk of women's basketball were the Barons to earn this recognition for the 2024-25 academic year.
Carter was a three-year member of the Franciscan Men's Lacrosse Team. The Virginia native accumulated 99 points over 38 games, including 63 goals. His goal total ranks among the Top 10 all-time in program history. He has also gathered 84 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers. Carter has also had great success in the classroom as well. He was named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll in each of his previous two seasons, and last season, he was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team. He should be able to add some more academic and athletic honors to his impressive resume, as he holds a 3.96 career GPA. Carter will be greatly missed, as he is transferring back home to finish his Civil Engineering degree next year.
The local product has excelled on and off the court over her four years at Franciscan. She played and started in 73 games as a Baron while missing her entire junior season due to injury. She filled the box score night in and night out, as her name is all over the program record book. She is the program leader in assists (215), second in steals (160), third in rebounding (604), and fifth in career scoring (723). The management major has dominated in the classroom as well. Her 3.95 career GPA has helped her earn PAC Academic Honor Roll accolades in each of her previous three seasons. She was also named to the CSC Academic All-District Team during her sophomore year. She was also named the PAC SAAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month in February of this year. Melnyk is very active on campus, as she works in the athletic department as a compliance assistant and is a national-certified personal trainer for fellow students. She plans to return to Franciscan in the fall to obtain he Master's in Business Administration.
