Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Aaron Spoelman

3rd Annual Baron Fall Classic Results

Franciscan 0, Case Western Reserve 2

Starting XI
Zachary Muldoon, Benjamin James, Aidan Mahony, Augustine Rubino, Gabriel Velez Reveron, Andrew Goduti, Anthony Venditti, Lucas Cross, Aidan Henninger, Luke Aaron & Goalkeeper - Aiden Miller

How It Happened
The Barons were at a loss for quality offensive possessions and their runs could never break through the Spartan defensive line and get into the box. The Spartans played a tight defensive game. It seemed early that the Baron possession time would eventually lead to a goal. However, it was a quick counter attack in the 34' that broke nil-nil. The tight defensive team buried into their defense and made any attempt harder for the Barons. They broke free for a second goal before half and then carried that through regulation. Coach was much happier with the effort and performance in the second half which was reflected by holding the Spartans to 0, but the chances weren't there. The Barons had only three shots in the second half.

Franciscan 9, Penn State Beaver 0

Starting XI
Zachary Muldoon, Benjamin James, Aidan Mahony, Augustine Rubino, Gabriel Velez Reveron, Andrew Goduti, Anthony Venditti, Lucas Cross, Aidan Henninger, Luke Aaron & Goalkeeper - Aiden Miller

How It Happened
Day two of the Baron Fall Classic went much better for the Barons. The midfielders and back line smothered every 50/50 ball keeping the Barons on the attack for nearly 90'. The Beaver defense was fairly solid early. With fresh legs they kept the Baron attack out of the box and held the score at zeros for 17'. However, the Lions kept trying to play the long ball pushing their forwards and midfielders far out of their defensive zone. The Barons won almost every ball at midfield, would pass back to the goalkeeper or the center back, and pull the Lions as far out of their defensive formation as they could. Their attack then caused the Lions to scramble back into position. It would only be matter of time before their legs tired and a hole would open up.
Freshmen Andrew Goduti broke the scoring open with his first collegiate goal off an assist from Auggie Rubino. When one team is in firm control of the game, but the opposition is hanging on with pure effort, the first goal is usually a breaking point and its not uncommon to see a quick couple of goals immediately after. What no one expected was eight more goals after. Once there was a break in the defensive seam, the Baron forwards had a field day. Goduti scored a hat trick, Willis, and Velez Reveron got their first goals as a Baron. Michael Peppiatt, Nathan Halberg, Scotto di Clemente, and Cross all got their first goals of the season.

Inside the Numbers
-the shot defecit was an astounding 43-2
-Barons had 13 corner kicks

Who's Next?
Franciscan remains at home to take on Capital on Wednesday night in a non-conference battle at 7:00 p.m. The Barons are in search of the first win against the Comets, as they are 0-1-1 all-time against them. Last season, they played to a 2-2 tie in Columbus. Ryan Miller and Aidan Mahony scored second half goals to help secure the tie in that matchup a year ago. This will be the third game of the year for the Comets as well after taking on Kenyon and John Carroll over opening weekend.
