Miller Ties Career-High, but Barons Fall in Tight Match

Franciscan 0, Kenyon 1

Starting XI
Augustine Rubino, Andrew Goduti, Anthony Venditti, George Phillips, Maddox Barker, Lucas Cross, Zachary Muldoon, Aidan Henninger, Nathan Halberg, Colm Corcoran, & Goalkeeper - Aiden Miller

How It Happened
There was a noticeable difference in the Baron attack in last night's matchup against the Kenyon College Owls. Offensive production has been missing so far this season. In games past, urgency from the beginning was a factor. Last night that urgency was immediate. The game kicked off with the Barons immediately on the attack. Only a few minutes in the game the Barons were awarded a Penalty Kick after a foul in the box (watch here).
Lucas Cross took the PK in his first career attempt at one. Cross went low right and the Owl keeper made his first big play of many for the night. The offense remained persistent and there were multiple opportunities, including some one on one with the goalkeeper chances, that the Barons just couldn't bury one. Meanwhile, the Owls had an advantage in restart opportunities specifically in corner kicks. In the 57' the Owls placed a corner kick short side. Miller was forced to that side of the net. In the scuffle the ball popped out right to the far side of the net right to an uncontested Owl forward who was staring at an open net. That put the Barons in a one goal deficit. The Owls made offensive efforts for a few more minutes, but at the 65' mark they began sending in constant substitutions. This burned a significant amount of precious clock time until the under 15 minute mark when the Owl subs would begin stopping the clock. The Barons had the pressure and came close to breaking the defensive line. The greatest opportunity came with only a few minutes remaining. The Barons put the ball in the box. The Owls sent it away, but it landed right back on our midfielder's foot. He immediately lobbed it back into the middle of the box to an all alone Lucas Cross. Just before the ball arrived, the Owl goalkeeper shoved Cross to the ground from behind to catch the pass and squash any Baron opportunity.
It may be frustrating to see such a talented team start 1-4, but the way we competed with one of the best teams in the country last night is evidence of what this non-conference schedule can do for a team. There are three more high level opponents coming up and last night's effort is a solid foundation to begin seeing some winning soccer.

Inside the Numbers
- Goduti and Cross each had one shot on goal
- Miller tied his career high of 10 saves

Who's Next?
Franciscan returns to action at Marietta on Saturday. The Barons are 3-3 all-time against the Pioneers, including wins in their last three meetings. Last season, in Steubenville, the Barons won by a score of 2-0. Lucas Cross scored early which held on to be the game-winning goal, and Aiden Miller had four saves to secure the shutout. The Pioneers sit around .500 in non-conference play, but are 0-1-1 against PAC opponents. They lost to Chatham and tied Washington & Jefferson earlier this season.
