How It Happened
Last night was the 2025 PAC Championship rematch. The Wolverines came into the night red hot. They've had an extremely difficult non-conference schedule and had rolled through all of their PAC counterparts up until this point giving them a 9-1-3 record. They used their speed and passing ability to keep the pressure on the Barons.
They broke the ice in the 25' with a lucky bounce. The wet rain made the ball slippery and a low-percentage shot deep in the zone slipped past Miller's hands and shoulder. The Barons were un-phased and the Wolverines knew that one goal wasn't enough against the Barons.
In the second half the Wolverines found the back of the net in the 68' and at that point felt like they put the game away. They cleared the bench cheering in the corner feeling the win at-hand. Still un-phased, the Barons kept on the attack. In the 78', the Barons were fouled in the box. Wolverines coach first challenged that the Barons forward was offside before the foul occurred. Thankfully, the call on the field stood and Venditti went to the line to take the PK. In his first career attempt, Venditti beat the keeper and pulled the Barons back within one.
The Wolverines sense of relaxation went away, but the momentum from the Barons and the energy from the crowd was tangible. Just three minutes later, Phillips found Haggerty who took a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar. It bounced straight down right on the goal line. A Wolverine was there to boot it away, but the official ruled it past the line and a goal. After a quick video review he confirmed it was a goal, and the Barons turned a late 2-0 deficit into a tie in just three minutes.
The Barons still sit in sixth place, but grabbing the tie vs the team a top the PAC will pay dividends in standings as the season draws to completion.
