How It Happened
The Barons hosted the St. Francis Red Wolves for the first time in history on the soccer pitch last night. To commemorate the first meeting of the programs, chaplain Fr. Jonathan St. Andre T.O.R. gave a pre-game speech and prayer to bless both teams and programs. PAC commissioner Joe Onderko joined the teams and chaplains at midfield to help honor the momentous occasion. In addition to the pre-game ceremony, the Barons partnered with Urban Mission to help collect Thanksgiving Day food for families in need in the Ohio Valley area. On behalf of the team, they would like to thank all of the supporters who donated, and congratulations to the lucky fan who won jersey #19 to celebrate 19 Franciscan soccer seasons.
The Red Wolves came in with an athletic, but very young team. The Barons experience showed early and they had firm control of possession. Their deliberate attack eventually led to a goal by Mahony in the first half to give a 1-0 lead. For the back part of the first half, the Red Wolves showed some urgency and used their athleticism to apply pressure and put the Barons defense on their heels. The Barons went into the half narrowly avoiding disaster multiple times to hold the 1-0 lead.
They got back on track in the second half. They went back to good control of the ball and tallied up three more goals. The Red Wolves tried repeating the first half events and use their speed to flip the field, but just when their efforts were starting to turn the possession meter, an unfortunate tackle from behind led to a straight red card and they played the rest of the game down a man.
With St. Francis ineligible for postseason play during the declassification process, last night's game had no effect on PAC standings. The Barons hold on to their clinch to the #4 seed and will host the Hiram Terriers on Saturday for the PAC Quarterfinals.
