How It Happened
To conclude the trip to Florida, the Barons had a doubleheader on Saturday against the Shoreman of Washington (Md.). It would be a pitcher's dual through three innings, as
Jacob Whitmore was clean and efficient in the early goings. Washington struck first in the fourth, after a lead off triple was driven in later that inning to take a 1-0 edge. The Shoreman chase Whitmore out of this one in the fifth, as they put up five runs, two of which would be earned runs to Whitmore. They would lead 6-0 through five innings.
Starting pitcher Mike Smith had a no-hitter through five innings, until
David Ferroni led off the sixth inning with a single. Maynard would get hit by pitch, and then Scavnicky would draw a walk to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout,
Brendan Burke would drive a ball deep enough to center to score Ferroni from third on a sacrifice fly. Head Coach
Rick Carver, then went to the bench, as
Ryan Anselmino would pinch hit. He delivered an RBI single that scored Maynard. Smith would get the final out for the Shoreman to head to the bottom of the sixth with the score at 6-2.
Alex Martine would come in from the bullpen for Washington and clean up the last two innings to prevent Franciscan from making a comeback in this one.
