How It Happened
The Franciscan Women's Swimming & Diving made the trip to Altoona on Saturday for a quad meet with two non-conference opponents, Pitt.-Bradford and Penn State Altoona, and one conference opponent, Chatham. The Barons continued to impress, as they were able to pick up a pair of wins. That would improve Franciscan's record to 8-5, as they set a program record for most wins in a season.
The meet started off with a very closely battled 200 medley relay. The team of
Lucia Garvey,
Kristen Farabaugh,
Olivia Mete, and
Bridget Bartosik battled hard to a second place finish. Garvey would deliver the first win of the day for Franciscan with a time of 1:04.51 in the 100 yard backstroke. That would also be her fastest time of the season, and 11th fastest in the PAC this season in that event. Mete kept up the success with a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.06 to edge out a swimmer from Penn State Altoona by three tenths of a second.
Jessica Stiles added to Franciscan's strong day with a second place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:46.28. Bartosik battled in the 100 yard freestyle, as she placed second but was less than a second off the lead. Mete had similar luck in the 200 yard breaststroke, as it came dwn to the final lap, but she was edged out by a swimmer from Pitt-Bradford. The last Franciscan individual win went to
Katarina Antonov in the 500 yard freestyle. Her time of 5:40.05 gave her the win, while teammate Katie Kinst placed third. The Barons closed out the meet on a strong note with their fastest time of the season thus far in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Up Next
Franciscan now has their focus on the PAC Championships which will be hosted by Grove City on February 15th-18th. This will be the third time the Barons have competed in this Championship as a member of the conference with them earning 6th place finishes each of the previous two times. The conference now has eight schools, with Allegheny joining this season, so it will be interesting to see how they will rank up with more swimmers than ever competing in this championship.
