How It Happened
The Franciscan Baseball team would shutdown the Thiel offense in game one, as they won 9-1 in seven innings.
Jacob Watson would pitch six strong for the Barons while only allowing one earned run.
Chris Furka and
Brendan Burke both connected for home runs in the win for Franciscan.
Chris Furka would get the action started in the first, as
Chris Furka connected on a two out home run down the line in left. It would be Furka's first home run of his Franciscan career. Both pitchers would settle in from there, as the score would be 1-0 heading into the home half of the fourth inning.
Declan Peterson and
Brendan Burke connected for back to back singles to lead off the inning.
Joshua Speaker would step up with a hot shot up the middle that would score Peterson.
Austin Horan would then put a charge into one, deep enough into left center, to score
Joshua Speaker on a sacrifice fly.Â
In the bottom of the fifth,
Joshua Costello led off the inning with a single to left field, and the
Kyle Ferrance drew a walk. With one out, catcher
Brendan Burke stepped to the dish. He connected with a bomb that would bring them all home, as he hit a three run homer, his first of his career. Watson would allow his lone blemish in the top half of the sixth, as the Tomcats plated one run .
The Franciscan offense was not done, as they would get runners at second and third with one out.
Declan Peterson delivered a single to left field, that would plate both runners. Peterson would late score on a Thiel error, to give Franciscan the 9-1 edge.
Patrick Wallace would come in and shut them down in the seventh to give the Barons the win in game one.Â

How It Happened
The Barons would strike first and have the lead a couple times, but the Tomcats would pull out the split at Vaccaro Field, as the win in 11 innings 12-8. Franciscan would hit three more home runs, with
Joshua Costello connecting on a pair and
Joshua Speaker hitting his first of the season.
Franciscan would hit a two out home run in the first inning, in back to back games, as
Chris Furka would get hit by a pitch and
Joshua Costello connected on a home run to left field to give the Barons a 2-0 lead. The Tomcats responded in the top of the second, by tying it back up at 2-2, with a 2 RBI single by Rago.
Joshua Speaker would give the Barons the lead back in the second, as he went yard with his first home run of the season on a bomb to left field.
Starting pitcher
Noah Smith would get into an early jam in the top of the third, that would result in a pair of runs by Thiel that would give them the lead at 4-3. Thiel would expand on that lead with another run in the fifth with another run to pull ahead 5-3.Â
The Barons would answer in the sixth inning, as
Brendan Burke continued his strong day, by driving in
Kyle Ferrance.
Joshua Speaker kept it going by grounding out to third, that scored Peterson, and just that it was tied at five all.Â
Daniel Halsey came in to pitch for Franciscan in the seventh, and he would struggle early on in his relief appearance. Halsey would allow two runs in the seventh, to give the Tomcats the lead at 7-5. Franciscan would not quit, as the top of the order was up to start the home half of the seventh.
Chris Furka would double in Patrik Wallace, and
Joshua Costello would hit another bomb, a two run shot, to give Franciscan an 8-7 lead.Â
In the eighth,
Joshua Speaker would give up one run to the Tomcats, to tie this one back up at 8-8. That score would hold, and we were heading to extra innings. In the 10th,
Patrick Wallace would hit a one out double to center field. The Tomcats would pull off a hidden ball trick, that would result in Wallace being picked off, once he took a lead off second base. The Barons did not recover, as the Tomcats plated four runs in the top of the 11th to give them a 12-8 lead that would hold for the final score of this one.Â

Franciscan will face Thiel two more times at their place on Monday. The first of two will count for conference records and go nine innings. The second game will count as non-conference and only be seven innings.Â
