How It Happened
Franciscan baseball got back to their winning ways, with a win a St. Vincent on Wednesday afternoon.
Noah Smith would pitch a gem of a game, as he went eight innings while only allowing two earned runs.
Franciscan would strike first in the top of the second inning, as
Joshua Costello would led off the inning with a home run to left center on a 2-1 count. It would be Costello's fifth home run of the season. He is now tied for the most home runs in the PAC this season, and he set a new Franciscan single season record, by breaking the previous high of four home runs by Charlie Parsons in 2011.Â
Noah Smith would continue to hold Saint Vincent scoreless, and the Franciscan bats would heat up in the sixth. The top of the order would get things going, as
Patrick Wallace and
Austin Horan would hit singles to start the inning.
Chris Furka would get on base on a fielder's choice and
Joshua Costello drew a walk to load the bases for
Kyle Ferrance. Ferrance would connect on a ball down the right field line for a double to drive in two runs.
Declan Peterson would keep the rally going as he reached on an error by Santana that would score a pair. That would chase out the Bearcat starting pitcher, as Saint Vincent would have to go to the bullpen. Justin Wright would allow a single to
Brendan Burke, the first batter he faced, and
Declan Peterson would score to give Franciscan a 6-0 lead.Â
Saint Vincent would get on the scoreboard in the eighth, as they would plate a pair of runs. Santana would double in a run, and then Evans would hit a sacrifice fly. Smith would complete his stellar pitching performance, by getting out of the eighth inning.
Patrick Wallace would come in the ninth and finish out the game with a scoreless frame.Â

Franciscan will return home for a doubleheader of PAC conference games on Saturday against Bethany. Franciscan is 1-3 all-time against Bethany, with the lone win coming in their last matchup in 2011. This will be the first time for Head Coach
Rick Carver to face his old team, that he coached for 29 years. Carver is the all-time wins leader at Bethany with 448 wins. This is a huge series for Franciscan, as Bethany is in 5th place in the PAC, just one spot behind Franciscan.Â
