How It HappenedÂ
Tonight's game marks 5th year goalkeeper Jax Mautone's 28th career win passing Brian Gaughan as the Barons' All-time leader in goalkeeper wins.
The Barons victory over Marietta was a tale of quality vs quantity. In the first half the Barons took only five shots with three of them on goal. Marietta took eight shots with three on goal. However, the Barons' opportunities were much higher quality and they converted their SOG to two goals, while all Marietta could muster were deep kicks from well beyond the box. At half, the Barons led 2-1.Â
The second half was more of the same from the first half. The defensive-minded Barons made counter attacks with long runs and relying on quality opportunities over quantity while Marietta continued to fire away from the top of the box. Each team added a goal in the second half. The Barons' goal came early in the 59th minute, while the Pioneers goal was late in the game. Marietta cut the lead to one with their late goal, but left them only two minutes to try and force the tie. The Barons tightened up and prevented the Pioneers from even getting a shot in those final minutes, and secured the 3-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers Â
-Kolbe Rice' game-winning goal is his second on the year
-Rubino's goal is his 4th on the year
-Aidan Mahoney scored his first collegiate point with the first Baron goal of the evening
-Mautone recorded 6 saves.Â
Who's Next?Â
Franciscan will have no game over the weekend, as they prepare to start conference play next week. The Barons will start PAC play on Wednesday at 5 pm, as they host Waynesburg. They hold a 10-5 record all-time against the Yellow Jackets with wins in their last eight matchups. Last season the Barons won by a score of 4-0. Lucas Cross, Ryan Miller, Aidan Henninger, and Zachary Muldoon would all score in the victory. The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish 10th in the PAC, but they will come into this game with a winning record from their non-conference slate of games.Â
